Roswell resident Cameron Birts will star as Aladdin in the Roswell Dance Theatre’s ballet “Aladdin” this weekend.

The Roswell High School senior will be starring in his second leading role this season with the dance theater’s pre-professional company. He also starred as the Cavalier in their Christmas production of the “Nutcracker.”

“It’s a very exciting production and the costumes and sets are outstanding” Birts said, in between his daily rehearsals. “But this is definitely bittersweet this year, with this being my senior year in high school and the dance company.

When his season is completed with the Roswell Dance Theatre and he graduates from Roswell High School in May, Birts will be leaving for New York, where he has already been awarded a full scholarship to attend the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center.

He has also had many other scholarship offers from American Ballet Theatre, Texas Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Houston Ballet.

“He will certainly be missed next season,” said Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz, artistic director of the Roswell Dance Theatre and its parent company, the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance.

Tolbert-Yilmaz, who has trained Birts for the past 10 years, described the teen as a very hardworking and dedicated dancer who she adores.

“Cameron is one in a million, not only his talent and hard work, but the wonderful person and leader he has become,” said Tolbert-Yilmaz.

The son of Travis and Alicia Birts describes himself as very much like the character he plays in the ballet production.

“We’re both diamonds in the rough. I still have a long way to go in my training before I become a true professional dancer. But with hard work and determination, I know I can do it,” he said.

The “Aladdin” production is being directed by Kassandra Taylor Newberry. Artistic director of the pre-professional company of the Roswell Dance Theatre is Tracey Bayley.

The cast of more than 100 dancers will perform at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1p.m.
