“I feel that our season has been a success so far because of our team unity. We have had our bumps in the road but we have weathered any problems we have faced this year and come out the better for it,” said head coach DJ Paradis.
Thus far in the season, the ’Canes have scored 45 goals and only given up eight, as they have met and exceeded “many of [their] goals,” according to Paradis.
One goal the team has for this season is to host a state playoff game this season. Paradis said his team still has a chance of taking first in the region if they win their last three region games against North Murray, Ringgold and Sonoraville.
“I believe this team will win region but we have to take care of business over the next couple matches,” Paradis said.
Whether they finish first or not, the season is almost over and Paradis said he feels confident about the upcoming state playoffs.
“Expectations are high and we look forward to playing anyone that will fall on our side of the bracket. We have the confidence and skill to match up with any team in AAA,” said Paradis.
On March 26 and 28, the ’Canes defeated Adairsville, 8-0 and 9-1, playing their “style of soccer” with few mistakes.
“I felt that our defense did an excellent job keeping the attack to a minimum and our offense was fluid in its ball movement and took the open shots when presented,” Paradis said.
The team has several key players right now — Matthew Bryson, Alec D’Urbano, Zac Edwards, Ross Pasley, Axel Ritcher and Harlan Ritcher.
Bryson is the leading scorer for the team with “almost a third” of the team’s points. Pasley and the Ritchers have been described as being creative players.
“These three players give us great chances to score with the way they can move the ball around field with the dribble or precision passing. They also take many of our attacking free kicks and corners which we have scored a high percentage of goals from,” said Paradis.
D’Urbano and Edwards have led the defense with their “game I.Q. and speed to stop anything” that comes their way, the coach added.
