Woodland boys, girls clinch county track meets

Woodland edged out Cartersville for the boys’ team title, while Woodland dominated the competition on the girls’ side in the Bartow County Championship March 28.

The host Woodland boys’ and girls’ teams faced off against Adairsville, Cartersville and Cass in the meet.

The competition for the boys’ team title came down to two teams as the difference between first and second was a mere five points. Woodland finished with 82 and Cartersville finished with 77. Cass’ boys finished third with 66 points and Adairsville finished with 23 points.

Woodland’s girls blew the other teams away as they finished with 118 points with Cartersville coming in second with 63 points, just over half of Woodland’s points. Cass’ girls pulled in 41 points, also coming in third while Adairsville finished with 20 points.

Woodland had several athletes from the boys’ and girls’ teams to place first in their events. For the boys, CJ Woods took first in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Davon Mitchell took first in the 400-meter dash. The school’s 4x400 relay team took first. Qua Stocks won the high jump and Tyler Heath took first in pole vault.

For the girls, Idraiah Thompson took first in the 100 and 200 dashes. Aubrey Branch won the 400 dash. Ashley Barrera won the 3200-meter run. The 4x100 and the 4x400 teams won. Brianna Brown took first in the high jump. Ariana Lovins won the long jump and Lacey Fritz took first in discus.

Stocks and Thompson both set new school records at this event.

Cartersville had some individual champions as well. For the boys, Tommy Morrison won the 800 and 1600 runs. Lawson Crowe took the 3200 run. Jahir Camps won the 110-meter hurdles. Marques Walker took first in the 300 hurdles and Jesse House took first in shot put.

For the girls, Bree Cole won the 800 and 1600 runs. Blake Perry won the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the triple jump. Anna Hightower won pole vault.

For the Cass boys, the 4x100 relay team took first place, Greg Edwards won long jump, Keylon Woodard won triple jump and Justin Reed won discus. Janee Callahan was the only female to take first from Cass as she won shot put.

Adairsville had no first-place finishers, but Jordan Character finished second in the boys’ 300 hurdles and Baylee Edwards finished second in the girls’ long jump.
