Helping lead the Alexander boys’ basketball team to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class A state playoffs this past season, Karim Mawuenyega signed a full scholarship to the University of South Carolina — Upstate last week.

“I think that he made a great decision. He loved the school, the atmosphere, players and staff. He will have an opportunity to come right in and play,” said Alexander head coach Jason Slate.

Mawuenyega said he was also considering Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee at Martin and the University of West Georgia.

However, Mawuenyega said he chose Upstate due to the family feel.

“I chose USC Upstate because I felt like I would fit in right away. It’s a family there, much like what we had here at Alexander,” said Mawuenyega.

As a 6-foot-1 point guard, Mawuenyega averaged 21 points, five rebounds and four assists a game as a senior.

Slate said in the process of getting Mawuenyega signed, Alexander sent out film and Upstate showed significant interest, “came out and watched him play and really liked him.” After a campus visit, Mawuenyega was offered a scholarship.

As he looks forward to the start of his collegiate career, Mawuenyega said he thinks the biggest difference between will be the level of physicality in the game. Despite that difference and many others, Slate said Mawuenyega will do well at Upstate.

“I think that he will do even better in college because of his incredible work ethic,” Slate said.
