Its beneficiary is the nonprofit Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry, which runs a food pantry at Holy Trinity Parish and a clothing closet at First Baptist.
“It’s what’s called emergency assistance,” said nonprofit board chairwoman Ruth Fruit, of Tucker. “It’s not a long-term solution. It’s short-term help to get you over a rough spot.”
Help includes giving out groceries and paying utility bills.
“They can get utility help once a year,” Fruit said about clients. “If they’re in danger of having the power cut off and the heat cut off, we can keep that from happening.”
Children attending the concert will help restock the food pantry since their admission price is two nonperishable food items.
The afternoon will be chock-full of Disney favorites from “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mary Poppins” and more.
“I’m excited about hearing them. The Avondale Children’s Choir and the DeKalb School of The Arts are going to sing and it’s going to be quite special,” Fruit said. “It’s ‘A Disney Spectacular,’ so the music will appeal to everyone.”
Chorus conductor Mary Anne Sharp, of Conyers, said children singing to children of all ages was her idea, but friends brought the school choirs to the table.
“When you do Disney, you’ve got to have kids,” she said. “It just evolved.”
