A component of Roswell’s ambitious plan for improvements to the Holcomb Bridge/Ga. 400 intersection is officially on its way.

City council members on Monday awarded a $476,919 contract to Parsons Brinkerhoff for design of a northbound early off-ramp for Ga. 400.

“It’s a very exciting project for our city,” Roswell Transportation Director Steve Acenbrak said.

The ramp is to be built from Ga. 400 near Raintree Drive to Market Boulevard.

Acenbrak said it would split northbound traffic early, alleviating congestion at the Holcomb Bridge Road exit and improving traffic flow.

In addition to improving safety along Holcomb Bridge Road between the existing off-ramp and Old Alabama Road, the new early off-ramp will provide an alternate route to Old Alabama Road.

“It will improve the economic viability of the area by generating more trips through what we call the southeast quadrant,” Acenbrak said.

“And it will probably shorten travel time for some of our residents.”

The new exit ramp will be unique in state transportation.

“To our knowledge this will be the first early off-ramp in the state of Georgia,” Acenbrak said.

Construction cost is estimated at $3 million. Both construction and design will be paid for by the 2012 capital improvements bond.

The design process should take around two years, Acenbrak said.
