Those supporting the motion were Board Chairwoman Pam Adamson, Ed.D. and Vice Chairwoman Mary Baker in addition to board members Ophelia Burroughs, Judy Johnson, Alieka Anderson, Ed.D and Charlton Bivins.
Opposing the motion were Jessie Goree, Mark Christmas and Michael King.
According to Adamson the board had held informal conversations regarding extending Jackson’s contact which, as it was previously written, would have expired on Sept.30 of this year.
Jackson declined any statement on her contract extension following the vote, saying she would comment at the next board meeting.
However, she has asked her name not be considered as a viable candidate for the position as the school board maps out its search process.
“The board has received support for extending Ms. Jackson’s contract,” Adamson said.
“She is a local person who has spent her educational career here in Clayton County and has secured her contacts and relationships here,” she added.
In addition, Adamson said, board members are very appreciative of what Jackson has accomplished since she was called on to be interim superintendent last September after the departure of Edmund Heatley, Ed.D.
Although Goree also said Jackson has done a great job, she believes board members owe it to their constituents to continue the search for a superintendent, a process she believes has not yet formally started.
“Originally, Ms. Jackson’s contract was supposed to go through Sept. 30,” Goree said.
“However, I believe if we are going to go beyond that date on a contract extension, we owe it to our constituents to have a superintendent search process under way as we need a person to full that position on a more permanent basis,” Goree added.
Adamson believes Jackson has stabilized the school system, “and has finished what she began.”
“In addition,” she said, “the Clayton County School System has been through so much with regard to our continued accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that it is not looking for more change right now.”
In regard to the search process, Adamson said the board has made a commitment to constituents that it would not only seek an experienced search firm to assist the board in the process but would receive input from the community on the issue.
“We may have gotten a bit preoccupied with the visit of the SACS investigation team but, now that the team has announced it would recommend our accreditation be continued, we are looking at when to schedule the community input meetings regarding the superintendent,” Adamson said.
