There are few more delightful ways to spend some Saturday nights this summer than enjoying a free concert in an outdoor park.

On Saturday, Roswell’s Riverside Sounds begins its monthly concert series, which takes place at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road through October from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Every year I get so excited about our line-up I don’t think we can top it the following year. We had some great acts last year, but once again we have managed to find some more outstanding talent to bring to the community,” said Morgan Timmis, the city’s historic and cultural affairs manager.

“I can’t wait to hear Chris Thomas King who I loved as Tommy Johnson in ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?,’” she said.

King’s bluesy roots will be front and center when he takes the stage to open the series on Saturday.

“And I’m equally excited to hear our other Louisiana band, The Revivalists. They were recommended to us by one of our avid concert goers and we’re thrilled we were able to book them,” Timmis said.

On June 1, the ragtime and jazz sound of Blair Crimmins and the Hookers will be heard. The eight-piece band Serenata brings salsa, merengue, Latin jazz and cumbias rhythms on July 6.

Renowned for a hard bop approach to the trumpet and a singing voice that has been compared to Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra, Joe Grandsen and his Big Band perform Aug. 3.

The New Orleans-based Revivalists show up Sept. 7 with a blend of soulful, syncopated rock and songwriting.

Closing the series is veteran rocker Randall Bramblett and his band. A side man who has played sax and keyboard with some of the biggest names in the business, Bramblett’s infectious music makes it virtually impossible to sit still.

Concertgoers are advised to bring blankets and coolers. A shuttle service will be offered this year to transport attendees to the park from the Ace Sand lot on Riverside Drive.

Also new for 2013 will be several food trucks at each concert provided through Fork in the Road.

Sponsors of Riverside Sounds include Hands On Family Chiropractic, Scroggin & Company, Spencer Pest Services, Lee J Howard Entertainment, The Roswell Neighbor and 97.1 The River.
