In a news release, the Georgia Lottery Wednesday announced a Smyrna woman working at a Publix in Sandy Springs had quite a lunch break last month when she bought at the grocery store a winning ticket worth more than half a million dollars.

Angelia Salas, 50, won the top prize playing the instant game $550,000 Grand Money at the Publix Super Market No. 1249, 5630 Roswell Road.

“I scratched it in the store,” Salas said in a statement. “I said, ‘Oh my gosh! Am I seeing this right? Is this real?’”

Salas handed the ticket to her supervisor, who confirmed her winnings.

“I feel like the whole world has been lifted off of me,” she said.

With her winnings, Salas intends to pay off her car note as well as her father’s car note. She also plans to pay off her father’s home mortgage.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $14.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
