In round one of the state playoffs, The Vikings jumped out to a 5-2 lead early against Kell and held off a late rally to win 5-4 at Hallford Stadium.
Goals by Andy Person and Cheikh Faye put the Vikings up 2-0 in the early minutes before Kell knotted the score at two midway through the first half. Ted Perry added a goal for Lakeside minutes later to send the game into intermission 3-2.
Senior striker George Gavrielides cashed in two insurance goals in the final 40 minutes to send Lakeside on to round two where they hosted Heritage High School of Conyers.
Against Heritage, Lakeside played a much tighter game — taking a 1-1 score through regulation and two overtimes before the match was decided on penalty kicks.
Both teams traded goals through two rounds of PKs before Dawit Alemu put his shot into the net to give Lakeside a 3-2 advantage. A shot over the crossbar by the Patriots and a swift strike by Lakeside’s Sebastian Arroqui gave the Vikings a 4-2 win in penalty kicks and 2-1 victory overall.
The two wins moved Lakeside into the state quarterfinals, making them the only male or female county school to reach the third round. The Vikings traveled to undefeated, and top-ranked, McIntosh for their Elite Eight matchup on Saturday where their season ended with a 6-1 loss.
Elsewhere in DeKalb, Druid Hills’ boys and girls soccer teams — that each claimed region championships this spring — advanced through the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs before suffering narrow defeats in round two.
The Red Devil boys beat Tri Cities (2-0) in the opening round — advancing to the second round for the first time since 2008 — before losing to North Cobb (2-0) in round two. The Lady Red Devils topped Westlake in round one (2-1) before falling to Tift County (2-1) in overtime a round later.
In Class AAAAA, the Lady Vikings of Lakeside used goals from Ashley Graham and Sage Bernard in a shutout (2-0) of Cambridge in round one, but suffered their first loss of the season in round two to Allatoona (4-3).
The Tucker boys — who used a game-winning goal from Shadrack Nsukami to beat Osborne (3-2) in round one — lost their second round state playoff game to Allatoona (2-1) as well.
Area schools making the state playoffs but losing in round one included the boys of Dunwoody, Chamblee, Stone Mountain and Decatur along with the girls teams at Chamblee, Dunwoody and Decatur.
