Lacrosse teams advance to state semifinal round

The Westminster girls kept their hopes for a fourth consecutive state championship alive after advancing to the semifinals of the Class A-AAAAA tournament.

The Wildcats defeated Lakeside of Evans 21-3 in the first round last Wednesday and beat Woodward 17-7 in the quarterfinals last Friday to advance to a semifinal contest at home against Starr’s Mill Wednesday.

The Wildcats will face a Starr’s Mill team that is the third seed from Area 1 and coming off a 12-11 win over Cambridge in the first round last Wednesday and a 12-7 triumph against Sprayberry last Saturday.

The two teams played during the regular season, with Westminster winning the contest 20-7.

The winner will play either Northview or McIntosh in the girls’ championship game Saturday.

St. Pius X defeated Pope 13-12 in the first round of the A-AAAAA girls’ playoffs last Wednesday before losing to Northview 16-3 in the second round last Saturday.

Lovett and Westminster were one step closer to a possible championship game matchup after the archrivals each advanced to the A-AAAAA boys’ semifinals.

Westminster defeated Lakeside of Evans 19-1 in the first round last Tuesday and beat Holy Innocents’ 12-5 in a second-round contest last Friday.

Holy Innocents’ advanced to the second round with a 12-7 opening-round victory over Greater Atlanta Christian last Tuesday.

The Wildcats were scheduled to take on Decatur — a 13-6 winner over Blessed Trinity in the second round last Friday — in a semifinal contest Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

Lovett beat Fellowship Christian 18-6 in the first round last Tuesday and Allatoona 13-5 in a second-round contest last Friday to move on to a semifinal contest against Northview Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

St. Pius X, Marist and Blessed Trinity saw their seasons come to an end with first-round losses in the A-AAAAA boys’ playoffs.

St. Pius lost to Pope 13-12, while Marist fell to Sprayberry 12-8 and Blessed Trinity was defeated by Woodward 13-11 in first-round action last Wednesday.
