Westminster, Lovett, Marist, St. Pius X and Blessed Trinity won their second-round series to advance to the quarterfinals of the state baseball playoffs.

The first two games of the best-of-three quarterfinal series were scheduled to be played Tuesday — with results not available at press time. The third game, if needed, will be played today.

Westminster (22-8) swept Rabun County in two games in its second-round Class AA series last Wednesday, winning both contests 10-1, to advance to host Toombs County in the quarterfinals.

“I was very pleased with our offensive approach, as Rabun County had two solid starting pitchers.” Westminster coach Russell Wrenn said.

Lovett (23-7) joins its archrival in the AA quarterfinals, where it went on the road to face Westside of Augusta. In their second-round series, the Lions beat Bremen 4-2 in the first game and 5-3 in the second contest last Wednesday to sweep.

Marist (23-7) advanced in the AAAA playoffs after sweeping Carrollton in the second round last Wednesday — winning its games 6-5 and 8-0.

“We were fortunate to win game one,” Marist coach Mike Strickland said. “I thought our guys stayed steady, even when we were not playing well — it ended up being the difference. We also got some great play off of our bench.

“Our pitching was really good in game two and, again, it was a total team effort, with contributions from our regulars and bench.”

St. Pius X (22-7) moved on to the AAA quarterfinals after defeating North Oconee in three games in a second-round series.

The Golden Lions lost the first game 8-1 and bounced back to win game two 8-0 last Wednesday, then took the third and deciding contest 4-0 to clinch the series and advance to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Pike County.

Blessed Trinity (24-4) earned its spot in the AAA elite eight after a two-game sweep of Ringgold — winning the first game 5-1 and the second contest 1-0.

The Titans went on the road to face Chapel Hill in their AAA quarterfinal series.

Woodward (19-9) saw its season come to an end with a second-round loss to Cartersville. The War Eagles lost 4-1 in game one and won 7-3 in the second game last Wednesday, but lost 4-3 in the third contest last Thursday.

Riverwood (18-10) was eliminated in its second-round AAAAA series with a two-game sweep at the hands of Loganville last Wednesday. The Raiders lost 10-0 in the first game and 12-2 in the second contest.

Holy Innocents’ (19-12) lost its second-round series to Region 5A rival Eagle’s Landing Christian. The Golden Bears were swept in two games last Wednesday, losing 6-1 in the opening contest and 4-1 in the second matchup.
