With a combination of raw power and precise technique, Roswell junior Richard Delphin became one of the premiere throwers in the state this spring.

Competing in the state’s largest classification, AAAAAA, Delphin won region 5AAAAAA championships in both the discus and shot-put on April 18 and advanced to the Georgia Olympics in Jefferson for a second straight season.

At the state meet Richard placed fourth in both events — hurling the 12-pound shot 51 feet, 9.5 inches and sending the 3.5 pound disc 147 feet, nine inches through the air.

“He is very technically sound and then has enough strength to support the technique,” said Roswell track and field coach Andy Schultz. “He’s also a hard worker when it comes to learning the throws, attending clinics on the weekends and traveling to indoor competitions with his club, Throw-1-Deep.”

The work ethic Delphin displayed in the last year helped him raise his personal records in the shot-put up six and a half feet, and more than 20 feet in the discus. Similar improvements between his junior and senior season would set him on a path to become a record-setter at Roswell, and possibly a state champion. “If [his improvement] continues he should break both school records and will have a chance to sit atop [both] podiums at the state meet his senior year,” said Schultz.
