Wolf Creek Amphitheater has a solution for listening to the tunes of past without taking a hit to budgets and pockets this summer — the new Affordable Old School concert series.

The concerts, which will feature a mash-up of old-school hip-hop and R&B music, will each have four musical acts and one comedian.

Sandy Ward, the entertainment director for the venue, said the concept was brought in by promoter J.D. Entertainment and is a partnership between the company and the local radio station V-103.

“The community is really excited about these shows,” she said. “They are particularly excited about the $25 lawn seats. This is why it is called the Affordable Old School concert series.”

Ward said attendance for the first show of the series was 2,400 on May 4, when Tony! Toni! Toné! members Dwayne Wiggins, Raphael Saadiq and Timothy Christian Riley performed their hits “Feels Good,” “Anniversary,” “It Never Rains in Southern California” and “Whatever You Want.”

Also on the bill were Atlanta R&B group Silk, rap group Whodini from Brooklyn, N.Y., Chubb Rock, The Planet All-Stars featuring Phillipia and comedian J.J. Williamson.

Even more fans are expected for the remaining three concerts.

“The Mint Condition show has already sold 3,000 tickets,” Ward said about the June 1 event. “If the rain subsides and we have sunshine, we might have a sellout.”

Last minute sales are expected to play their part, as well.

“Walk-up sales are very important,” Ward said. “A lot of people wait until the last second to buy tickets. That has been our experience.”

Bringing such a wealth of talent and music has been a benefit for both the venue, the community and its residents, said Ward.

“The shows are great,” said Ward. “We are very happy to have them.”

Upcoming performances include K-Ci & Jo Jo on Aug. 3 and the series closer on Sept. 7 featuring Avant, according to Wolf Creek’s website.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drink items to the venue.

Food and beverage items will also be available for sale on-site.

Parking at the venue is $10 per car.
