Community events showcasing the men and women who work in Roswell’s public works/environmental, community development and transportation departments will be center stage during National Public Works Week, May 19 to 25.

On Saturday, Touch-A-Truck will give residents an opportunity to see how equipment such as a street sweeper and a sanitation truck works. The event is at Roswell city hall from 9 a.m. to noon.

Drivers will compete in a Sanitation Truck Rodeo Tuesday at city hall at 7 a.m. They will be driving backward around the circular drive, maneuvering through an obstacle course and emptying trash cans into dumpsters, all while being timed.

Employees from Roswell’s public works/environmental and transportation departments on May 23 will test their skills in handling forklift equipment while being judged on time and accuracy. This event is at 8 a.m. at 1810 Hembree Road behind the Fire, Transportation and Public Works Facility building.

In a May 24 competition at Roswell Area Park at 10 a.m., employees from Roswell’s public works/environmental and transportation departments will try handling trackhoe equipment, while being judged on time and accuracy.

All events are free and open to the public.

This year’s National Public Works Week theme is “Because of Public Works...,” which highlights the quality of life brought to communities around the world.
