In an effort to offset a $60.9 million budget shortfall, Atlanta Public Schools is considering selling the property where Atlanta International School in Buckhead currently sits.

Atlanta International has rented the land from the district since 1995, and its lease expires in 2051, school spokeswoman Courtney Fowler said in an email Friday. From 1932 to 1991, the district’s North Fulton High School occupied the campus, which includes a building constructed by famed architect Philip Trammel Shutze.

The district has offered Atlanta International $6.15 million for the school and $2.25 million for International Baccalaureate services, Fowler said. The private school uses the IB program in its curriculum.

“We believe that the $8.4 million proposal would benefit many,” Fowler said. “APS would receive funds during a time of budgetary need, and AIS would ensure that our current campus in the Garden Hills neighborhood remains our permanent home. In addition, the current form of the proposed purchase agreement includes International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher training and a consultative commitment over the next three to five years. While we are an independent school, AIS aims to be an advocate of innovative, rigorous and relevant education for all of Atlanta’s children.”

Calls and emails to district spokesman Stephen Alford seeking comment on the proposed sale were not returned Friday.
