With Chip Capper out for the year after having Tommy John surgery last summer, Westminster needed a new ace pitcher as it entered the 2013 season.

Enter Hays Meyer, who has stepped up to fill the gap and play a big role in the Wildcats’ march to the Class AA state baseball semifinals.

The senior right-hander had an 8-2 record and a 1.45 earned run average, allowing only 38 hits and recording 64 strikeouts in 58 innings, going into the Wildcats’ semifinal series with Pepperell, which began Monday.

Meyer got Westminster off to a strong start in its best-of-three series against Toombs County, firing eight strikeouts and allowing five hits to get a complete-game win in the Wildcats’ 7-1 opening-game victory.

In Westminster’s 10-1 win in the first game of its second-round series with Rabun County May 8, he allowed only three hits in six innings and struck out seven hitters. “We love the depth we have on our team, and we get contributions from all over the lineup,” Westminster coach Russell Wrenn said. “But, Hays has been an absolute key to the season we’ve had. We knew we were going to be without [Capper] and Hays has really stepped up and became the dominant ace pitcher that anyone who’s going to make a deep run in the playoffs is going to need. “He’s been so consistent, outing in and outing out. We would not be in the position we are in without him.”
