After the season Shawanye Lawrence had throwing the shot put, it came as no surprise when he walked away with gold at the Georgia Olympics.

Earlier this month, the Eagle’s Landing senior notched his fifth straight first-place throw (54 feet, five inches) for the Class AAAA state championship.

“My success this season was a result of hard work and my coach [Claud Spinks],” Lawrence said. “He basically taught me all the techniques I know. I was able to develop a lot of skill from him.”

“Shawanye works very hard and is mentally tough,” Spinks said.

Lawrence also had an impressive season throwing the discus, earning four consecutive first-place finishes before capturing a bronze medal in Jefferson.

“Coach Spinks encouraged me to go out for track when I was a ninth grader,” Lawrence said. “At first, I really didn’t want to go out but I decided to give it a shot and it paid off.”

At the moment, the 6-foot-4 athlete is preparing to compete for playing time as a defensive end at Georgia State University, where he will major in exercise science.

“Right now, I’m in the weight room Monday, Wednesday and Friday and running Tuesday and Thursday,” said Lawrence, who will graduate with a 3.3 GPA.
