ELCA’s Dalton Etheridge may not have been the most talented player on his football or baseball team, but the junior excelled at two of the most cerebral positions – quarterback and pitcher – which were key elements in the Chargers becoming state champions in both sports.

Against Prince Avenue Christian in December, Etheridge completed 7-of-8 passes for 107 yards and ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the Chargers’ 33-0 victory for the Private Class A title.

“I’m proud of the way our team played,” ELCA football coach Jonathan Gess said. “These guys deserve this.”

The dual-threat quarterback has earned the interest of Auburn University, Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.

Then in the spring, Etheridge excelled on the mound, compiling a record of 12-0 with a 1.49 ERA and 92 strikeouts en route to helping the Chargers sweep Mt. Paran Christian for the Private Class A crown.

His biggest imprint on the series was in Game 1 when he struck out 10 batters against one run and five hits in the 5-1 outcome.

“These guys did not have a bad day throughout the playoffs at all,” ELCA coach Doug Campbell said. “They came to play all the time.”

The football team earned a 13-1 record and the baseball team had a 30-3 mark.
