In a news release Thursday, Heritage Sandy Springs announced its June 2 Concerts by the Springs performance with Gwen Hughes and The Retro Jazz Kats has been rescheduled for Aug. 18. The free concert was stopped when lightning and heavy rain threatened the safety of the audience in attendance.

Hughes, a Sandy Springs resident, leads the swing jazz band. The six-piece horn group will perform a set of big-band swing music, jazz hits and American standards such as Sinatra and Gershwin, with the occasional surprise mixed in.

“Gwen Hughes and The Retro Jazz Kats managed to squeeze in two songs during their brief set on June 2,” Heritage Special Events Director Rebekah Henry Murphy said. “The weather was extremely unfortunate, but just based off that brief set, the audience immediately fell in love with the band and the vocalist, Gwen Hughes. We received many requests to bring her back and we are happy to have found a date available on her busy international touring schedule.”

The rescheduled performance joins the remaining 2013 Concerts by the Springs season:

o July 14: The A-Town A-List (http://www.atownalist.com)

o Aug. 4: The Mustangs (http://www.themustangs.net)

o Aug. 18: Gwen Hughes and The Retro Jazz Kats (www.retrojazzkats.com)

o Sept. 8: Kinchafoonee Cowboys (http://www.kinchafooneecowboys.com)
