Alpharetta resident Jen Hunt has founded Alpharetta Tours and will be offering HOWLpharetta ghost tours downtown starting July 12.
Alpharetta resident Jen Hunt has always been interested in stories of the past. When she moved to Alpharetta from Marietta last year, she decided to join the Alpharetta Historical Society.

She also delved into research on her own and started sharing what she learned with others. Her husband suggested she start a walking tour business.

“I started giving impromptu tours to friends, and they really enjoyed it,” Hunt said. “So I said okay, let’s go for it.”

Her company — Alpharetta Tours — will roll out to the public July 12. While Hunt hopes to eventually offer a variety of walking tours, the company will kick things off with a ghost tour through downtown coined “The HOWLpharetta Tour.”

The tours will take place on Friday and Saturday nights and last between an hour and a half to two hours. Tours include a stop through Resthaven Cemetery, which is normally closed to the public in the evenings.

“The city was gracious enough to let us go in there at night,” Hunt said.

While she does not claim to be an expert on the supernatural, the topic of ghosts does fascinate her.

“It’s kind of on the horizon for everybody right now,” she said. “There’s all the ghost adventure shows, and I’ve been on a lot of ghost tours myself.”

As Hunt dug deep into the history of the city, she uncovered many stories about Alpharetta’s deceased.

“A very interesting thing that I came across was that [at] one of the stops that we go to [on the tour], there was a murder/suicide that occurred in 1912,” she said.

Although the case was well documented at the time and is known by some longtime residents, Hunt’s research led her to another old court case involving the man accused of committing the murder/suicide, which brings ties of jealousy and corruption to the murder story.

“Some of the members of the genealogy group I had talked to said they had never heard of [the other case] before and were so happy to get a piece of that information from the court records,” she said.

“Just being able to find out some information that no one else had actually tied together with this gentleman was fascinating.”

Hunt hopes Alpharetta Tours will interest longtime locals, newcomers and tourists alike.

“We’re hoping that everybody gets to learn a little something or at least be entertained in some way,” she said.
