It’s been a successful summer for the NYO 11U Firebirds.

The Firebirds recently closed the 2013 season with a 25-5 record and four of the six tournaments that they participated in.

“We didn’t win all of [our tournaments], but four of six is pretty good,” Firebirds coach Ed Goetze said. “Overall, we went 25-5, so that’s a pretty good percentage for a baseball team.”

The Firebirds earned their fourth and final tournament title by winning the 10-team Dizzy Warm-Up competition at All Tournament Players Park in Marietta June 18 through 23.

They fell just short of winning a fifth title at the state Dizzy Dean tournament in Canton June 28 through 30, advancing to the semifinals.

The Firebirds began their successful summer by winning the Memorial Day Madness in Woodstock May 24 through 26.

They followed that up with their second tournament title in a row, winning the Southeastern All-Star Championship in Douglasville May 29 through June 2.

In the finals, the Firebirds defeated the Northwest Georgia Renegades 6-5, with Harris Greenbaum scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Southeast All-Star Showdown VII in Woodstock June 5 through 9 was the third tournament the Firebirds clinched.

They were awarded the title as the top remaining seed in the tournament after heavy rains that started before their semifinal game with the Buckhead Bombers forced the cancellation of the rest of the event.

Goetze was most impressed with how his team gelled together as a unit.

“I think the good part about the team was that these kids took to the idea that they would play as a team,” Goetze said. “It was fun to see them come together and really bond with each other and really appreciate what their teammates can do.

“I think we had a good mix of players and it’s sort of clear what each player can do and what role they are playing. They understood their roles and that made it easy to coach the kids.”

Team members are Tanner Bivins, Sam Caffarelli, Joseph Clementi, Taylor Cohen, Jordan Culley, David Goetze, Harris Greenbaum, Sam Harrington, Connor Hay, Hamilton James, Alex Thomas and Alex Vanlandingham.
