Head Coach Kent Howard said, “I came up with the idea two years ago when brainstorming on new, fun ideas for camp. It so happened that it fit our community’s need to kill two birds with one stone by promoting stronger relationships between campers and their male role models and building better basketball fundamentals.”
Open to kindergarten through sixth-graders, the camp is set for July 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. and July 20 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Adairsville High School gym. All campers must be accompanied by a male adult – father, guardian or “role model,” Howard said.
For $50 the campers and their adult will receive a camp T-shirt, food, fundamental skills and competition.
Registration can be done the day of the camp.
While the name of the camp implies that only fathers are allowed to accompany their sons, Howard made it clear that a father is not the only person who can accompany the camper — given there are different household dynamics.
“Unfortunately, some of our campers will not have a father who can attend…We want every young boy and their father figure [to have] the opportunity to learn about the game of basketball and each other,” he said.
Being a basketball camp, one of the main focuses will be learning the fundamentals of the game, but while the campers learn basketball they will also be partaking in the other focus of the camp which is to better their relationship with their male parent or role model.
Since most camps usually have the camper learning the game of basketball with their peers only, this camp offers a different perspective than the rest, but Howard said that doesn’t make it any better.
“The benefit is the camp emphasizes both basketball and relationships. It doesn’t necessarily have an advantage over others....it’s just a different approach to fun, basketball and family bonding,” Howard said.
Some of the older players on the varsity basketball team, according to Howard, will be in attendance as assistants along with his assistant coach.
