Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced 58 public school teachers across the state were named 2013 Master Teachers, with 12 of them teaching in Johns Creek, Milton, Alpharetta and Roswell.

With 16 teachers total from the Fulton County School System earning the designation, this is the third consecutive year the district has had the most Master Teachers in the state.

Created by the General Assembly in 2005, the Georgia Master Teacher Certification Program identifies and recognizes educators who have positively influenced student achievement in the classroom and consistently demonstrated excellence.

“This special designation shows that teachers in Fulton County are committed to effective teaching methods and research strategies,” Superintendent Robert Avossa said in a news release. “They are among a distinguished group of educators whose students have achieved great academic outcomes.”

These professionals now receive a Master Teacher designation on their teaching certificates for a period of seven years and are eligible to automatically renew it as long as they continue to qualify for Master Teacher status.

In order to be eligible for the program, teachers must be working full-time, have had at least three years of successful teaching experience on a Georgia Clear Renewable Certificate, and provide evidence that linked classroom instruction to students’ achievement and progress.

Since its inception, 818 educators statewide have earned the certification, including the 58 teachers who received the 2013 distinction.

With 110 total, Fulton County leads the ranks of Master Teachers among all Georgia school systems.

The 2013 Master Teachers from north Fulton schools are:

Jennifer Remer — Autrey Mill Middle School

Robert Tyo — Autrey Mill Middle School

Cara Hain — Crabapple Middle School

Gwendolyn Bryant — Manning Oaks Elementary School

Deana Skimel — Northwestern Middle School

Crystal Dorn — River Trail Middle School

Jennifer Beard — River Trail Middle School

Alison Smock — Roswell High School

Celeste Wesner — Roswell High School

Lindsey Tovrog — Taylor Road Middle School.
