Junior middleweight boxer Mariem Brakache is preparing herself for a bright future after boxing.

While hoping to return to the ring next month after a two-year absence, Brakache, who was born in Morocco and raised in the Netherlands, is studying to become a chiropractor at Life University.

“When I retire, I plan to continue working with boxers to help them perform at an optimal level,” said Brakache, who doesn’t have a definite date of when she will hang up her gloves for good. “My ultimate goal is to be the official chiropractor for women’s Olympic boxers.”

Brakache also signed a letter which led to women’s boxing being a sport at the 2012 Olympics and so on.

“I would encourage all young girls and women to start training like a beast and prepare for the Olympics in Brazil,” Brakache said. “This is something that many great women athletes like Mitzi Jeter, Terri Moss, Chevelle Hallback, Nicole Woods, Ann Wolfe, Eliza Olson, Lucia Rijker, Joenette Giselle Ife Salandy, Anna Ingman and Holly Holm have paved the way to.”

When Brakache is not in the classroom or studying, she has been in the Metro Fitness gym working out with longtime trainer Barry Richardson.

“I’m really proud of her and the way she is going at her school work just like she did with her boxing career,” Richardson said. “She isn’t pulling any punches. She’s acing the tests.”

“Barry always tells me the truth,” Brakache said. “If I need more work on a technique, he will make sure I understand why, and if I do something really well, he mentions that as well. When I listen, I trust him with my eyes closed. That is how we won the World Championship in Beijing.”

(In 2005, Brakache defeated Cristy Nickel by unanimous decision for the IBA Women’s Light Middleweight belt.)

Brakache’s record is 6-7 with two knockouts and a draw. She recorded one of those knockouts with a third round TKO victory against April Ward almost two years ago.

Brakache is also a certified fitness trainer for youth and adults, and can speak six languages (Arabic, Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish).
