High fashion will be on display in downtown Cartersville for the annual High Heel Parade.

Organized by Melissa and Co. Salon in Cartersville, the event is a benefit walk that allows participants to show off a dazzling display of artfully-designed high heels.

Melissa Porter, owner of the salon, said she was inspired to create the event as a fundraiser for Bartow Relay for Life.

“I was inspired to start this event after meeting and interacting with Alyssa Leonard and Beth Wesley, two little girls who have completely touched my heart,” Porter said. “I have also had many family members and myself affected by cancer, so I thought this would be a fun thing to do to raise money for Relay [for Life] and something Beth and Alyssa could enjoy as well.”

The parade will be Aug. 17 and consists of participants registering to walk part of the parade route in high heels decorated in the color that represents the type of cancer for which they would like to raise money for research.

Registration is $10 per person or $100 for teams of 10 or more. Children 10 and under are free.

Porter and her salon’s stylists and staff will be participating and hope the community will come out to join them.

Hailey Hightower, salon manager and one of the event’s co-organizers, said taking part in the parade and its accompanying events has been hard work, but rewarding.

“Helping to organize this event this year to make it even bigger has been a pleasure for me,” Hightower said. “My stepfather was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, so helping to raise money to for Relay really touches my heart in a time like this.”

Hightower said this year the event is much larger than in years past.

New additions this year are a beauty pageant, fashion show, vendor booths and The Flavor of Cartersville.

“We have lots of vendors and restaurants signed up and anxious to be a part of such a great cause,” Hightower said. “We will even be participating in a flash mob around noon.”

The events will begin at 9 a.m. at the public square and continue until about 9 p.m. Hightower said.

Individual and team winners will receive trophies and gift certificates to the salon. There also will be winners selected for best high heel, the Fantasy Stylist competition and even an award for the best dressed pet.

The day culminates with a silent auction and celebration at Knights on Main Street.
