After delaying action on the fiscal year 2014 budget July 9 Hiram City Council last week passed an almost $6.1 million budget.

The council attended a work session, public hearing and special called meeting Thursday which led to a unanimous vote to pass the budget.

The approved budget was a decrease from about $6.2 million in 2013.

Some council members on July 9 wanted more exact numbers on what bills they still had to pay in the 2013 budget before passing the 2014 budget.

Post 3 Council Member Teresa Philyaw said they received some figures before last week’s meeting.

“We got more numbers that we were happy with,” she said.

Another number council members were happy with was the use of reserve funds. In the tabled budget they planned to use $187,890 from reserves, but in the final budget they used $185,744, said City Manager Robbie Rokovitz.

“We were very accurate with that,” he said. “That is the last [fund] to be used.”

Also the city staff was able to find some expenditures to eliminate from the tabled budget. From the city administration fund they cut $7,267, and from support services $537.

Mayor Doris Devey said, “I think the council did a very good job at questioning what needed to be questioned.”

She said Rokovitz created a good budget and she is glad to see it passed.

The city’s fiscal year 2014 started July 1.
