Tuesday is National Night Out, a nationwide campaign to promote crime prevention awareness and to strengthen the relationship between the community and local law enforcement.
The cities of Alpharetta and Milton will co-host a National Night Out event at the Wills Park Equestrian Center, while the Roswell Police Department will hold its festivities at Roswell City Hall. Both events will take place from 6 to 9 p.m.
More than 2,000 visitors turned out for the event in Alpharetta last year, said Officer John Allen with the Alpharetta Public Safety Department. He said he hopes residents leave the gathering with an appreciation for what public safety professionals do.
“We take the public’s safety seriously and it’s very important to us,” Allen said.
The event will feature K-9, SWAT, firefighter and rescue demonstrations, some of which include the use of simulated blank gunfire or noise-making devices. Spectators can also check out a state-of-the-art SWAT bus and police and fire vehicles.
“I know for a lot of little boys and girls, it’s just neat to be able to go and get that close to fire trucks and police cars and talk to officers and firefighters and get to see them in a safe environment and get to do some pretty cool things,” said Milton’s Communications Manager Jason Wright.
Allen said visitors will have the chance to get a sneak peak into what police officers and firefighters do on a daily basis.
“You actually get to interact with your public safety personnel,” he said. “So there will be a familiar, friendly face if there is ever any emergency.”
The block party atmosphere of the event helps serve as an opportunity for residents to get to know their neighbors better.
Free hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream will be served. National Night Out is an event for all ages, and children who come can enjoy time playing in bounce houses.
At Roswell City Hall, kids can enjoy a rock climbing wall, a bounce house, spin art and face painting. The free community event will also include SWAT and K-9 demonstrations, police vehicles, fire equipment, local vendors, prizes, food and drinks.
