A Michigan-based food distributor was set to host a job fair for truck drivers after seeking approval this week for construction of a new Douglasville distribution center.

Gordon Food Service was seeking CDL drivers with Class A licenses during an event Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Hilton in Lithia Springs, company spokeswoman Deb Abraham said.

Douglasville’s Zoning Board was set to consider an application for a food distribution center this week that could employ 200 within three years.

The company applied for approval for construction of a center on Riverside Parkway after recently announcing plans for the new distribution center, Abraham said.

The company will build a 260,000-square-foot facility in the new Riverside West Business Park on Riverside Parkway in Douglasville, she said. Construction will begin later this summer and be operational in summer 2014, she said.

In addition to adding the new facility to its U.S. distribution network, the company also announced plans to consolidate the warehouse operations of its 110,000-square-foot Greenville, S.C., facility into the Douglasville center.

Company officials determined the Atlanta area would be the best location to meet the needs of the company’s growing customer base in the Southeast due to the proximity of customers in that region, she said.

The company plans to offer opportunities at the new facility once it is completed by fall 2014, she said. Though some will move from the Greenville center, the majority of hires will be in the Atlanta area, Abraham said.

Company president Tony Groll said in a statement, “We have been studying our distribution network in the United States intensively for several months. The decisions we are making now are critical to maintaining and strengthening our ability to support our current customers and long-term growth.”

Gordon Food Service is North America’s largest family-owned and managed broadline foodservice distributor, a release stated. It distributes to food service operators within the midwestern, northeastern and southeastern U.S. and coast to coast in Canada.
