Since moving to Atlanta, Biggs has opened five boxing gyms, including the Decatur Boxing Club, which is nearly eight years old. “One of my former clients wanted to start a gym with me in Decatur because it’s a good area,” said Biggs. “This is my best gym because it showcases old-school, authentic and real boxing.” Biggs’ extensive training background, which includes experience with world champions such as Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor, Rocky Lockridge, Johnny Bumphus and others.
While Xavier does offer services to amateur and professional boxers, the majority of clientele at the club have different backgrounds. “I have young professionals come here because they realize that boxing is the best form of fitness,” said Xavier. “I love getting people in shape because its one of the best things you can do for your spirit, health and mind.”
The most famous client may be Atlanta-native and musician Usher who featured the club during a training session for his singers on the NBC television competition, “The Voice.”
“The appearance has brought more attention to the DBG,” said Biggs. “It’s a blessing because I love to use my boxing experience and abilities to serve people and being on the show helps open doors to it.”
The group that benefits the most from the club is the youth of DeKalb County, who are often in the gym jumping rope, using the heavy or speed bags and working on technique with their trainers. “We have a youth program which I love because it gives the young teens something positive to focus on,” said Xavier. “I came from Philadelphia and saw a lot of my friends in bad situations because they didn’t have the right outlet. Once the youth come to the gym, it becomes a productive and positive alternative to the street stuff and I love that.” More information about the club is available at www.decaturboxing.com.
