Talks concerning the planned redevelopment of the North River Shopping Center primarily centered on parking lot aesthetics during Tuesday’s Sandy Springs Design Review Board meeting at City Hall.
North River, once an afterthought, is set to house a new Stars and Strikes bowling alley and a relocated Family Dollar store at its Roswell Road location later this year.
Board members agreed to most preliminary variances from the zoning ordinance proposed by Mimms Enterprises, the Roswell-based firm in charge of the project, Tuesday but would not relent on the issue of parking lot beautification.
“We will approve what you want, but we’re going to get tougher and tougher as [things progress],” board member Charlie Roberts told Mimms Senior Vice President Tosh Wolfe. “This is an area of town that needs uplifting.”
The design board approved Mimms’ certificate of endorsement, but relayed its recommendations for planting islands in front of the Family Dollar store as well as additional plantings on the property.
In other business, the board also deferred any further action on the proposed Waffle House at 6445 Roswell Road until its next meeting in two weeks. That location will replace the current Waffle House at 226 Mount Vernon Hwy. The Sandy Springs City Council last week approved its sale to the city to pave the way for its new city center.
Board members are awaiting company architects’ landscaping and sidewalk plans.
