Before the 2013 football season officially got underway, there was an unfortunate and tragic outcome last Friday when Creekside football player De’Antre Turman died as a result of a neck injury in a scrimmage against Banneker.

According to multiple reports, Turman, a junior cornerback, made a tackle against a receiver and fell limp to the ground. Turman was unresponsive on the field and was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.

"It was a fundamental tackle,” Turman’s IDareU coach Glenn Ford said. "His head was up. It was a clean tackle. It was a clean tackle. He went down. Only God knows. You know, only God knows what happened.”

On Saturday, a Fulton County medical examiner ruled Turman fractured his third vertebrae.

“Not only was he loved at his school but at all schools around this entire community,” Ford said. “People knew Tre Tre. They knew and loved him.”

Turman was just 16 years old and had a scholarship offer from Kentucky.

I am so sorry for this young man's tragic death. My heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and teammates. My sons play football too and the team becomes a family. If being directed by a good coach they learn discipline, teamwork and focus. All atheletes in all sports run the risk of injury but football sometimes produces the worst ones when they happen.
