Saturday, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Georgia chapter will join CBS Atlanta for its annual Great Shredder Event at Turner Field’s Blue Lot in downtown Atlanta. This free event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to everyone.

In addition to shredding paper, the society will collect donations of non-perishable food and gently used clothing as well as provide recycling services for non-working and outdated electronics. This year, CBS Atlanta is attempting to surpass the world record of collecting and shredding more than 8.4 tons of paper in one day.

“St. Vincent de Paul Georgia is excited to partner with CBS Atlanta for the Great Shredder event,” said John Berry, the society’s CEO and executive director. “St. Vincent de Paul’s participation will greatly expand the list of items to be collected beyond paper, including resources of food and clothing and the recycling of old and outdated electronic equipment which no longer serves a purpose and is now collecting dust.”

These provisions and recycled items will provide the opportunity for the society to continue to serve individuals in its community in need of food, clothing, shelter and job training.

Last year, the organization served more than 146,000 people in Georgia and provided more than $14 million in financial assistance to those it served.
