North Fulton Community Charities is seeing more than 100 families a day who are in need of food or financial help.

Food requests tend to increase in the summer when children are home from school and food goes out the door faster than it comes in.

This summer, the community has been generous with food drives and food donations have been higher than ever, according to a statement released by the organization.

In July, North Point Community Church collected more than 15 tons of food, with help from businesses such as Lexis Nexis, Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and Siemens.

Other food drives and individual donations have also helped.

Donations of fresh produce from the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Unity Garden, backyard gardeners and local community gardens are welcome additions to the staple food being given out daily to hungry families.

But as September begins, “we find our food pantry shelves bare of certain important food items. Canned meats, non-creamed soup, peanut butter and jelly, dry beans, canned vegetables (not corn or green beans) and tomato products are especially needed. We are asking that when you visit your local grocery store and shop for your family, please purchase a few extra items for your neighbors,” according to a statement.
