What not yet become as widely is its standing as a cornerstone of the metro area’s visual arts community.
As the nine galleries on and around Canton Street and Oak Street get more exposure, however, that could easily change. Now, with new life being breathed into the moribund Roswell Art District coalition, the galleries could be ready for rock star status.
“We are excited to get RAD back and running and have decided after a long hiatus to change things up a bit,” said Donna McDonald, co-owner of Muse & Co. Fine Art.
“The Roswell Art District used to hold two art walks a year, one in the fall and then in the spring. Our focus was to introduce people to galleries in Roswell.
“So we decided to have the art walks monthly because we want people to get excited about and look forward to having a monthly event where fine art is the focus.”
The First Friday Art Walks will begin this Friday from 6 yo 9 p.m. and will continue on the first Friday evening of every month.
“With all the wonderful restaurants in the area, Friday nights have become such a big date night, we figured what better time to have us all get together for art events,” said Mary Means of Taylor Kinzel Galleries.
“An art walk is an elegant evening of art openings, music, and tastings at each gallery. Anyone interested in art can come to the event and each gallery tries to structure their openings to best suit their individual customer base so you tend to get a wonderful variety in the types of art offered.”
The art walks, which in the past were always very successful and anticipated events, aren’t just for those who may be in the market for some artwork, Means said. “They’re for all art lovers. It’s a great way to talk to the artists in person, expose yourself to new and varied works of art, and meet people in genera!.”
Participating galleries are Ann Jackson Gallery, Galerie Matilda, SLM Studio & Gallery, Synergy Fine Art, Taylor Kinzel Gallery, Vinings Gallery, Muse & Co. Fine Art, Cowgirl Studios and the lobby of the Roswell Cultural Arts.
Visitors will see a mixture of artwork by both local and internationally acclaimed artists, paintings in every medium and style from contemporary to traditional, sculpture, jewelry, glass and more.
Special works will be on display at each gallery for the Art Walk. At Taylor Kinzel, for example, there is an opening reception and "pastel on suede" painting demonstration with artist Bob Ichter.
Vinings Gallery will be unveiling the latest limited editions "Over the Top" and" Better & Better" from Thomas Arvid, America's most beloved painter of wine.
Each gallery is offering wine or other festive libations along with light hors d’ouevres and nibbles.
First Friday Art Walk is a self-guided walking tour but a free trolley is also available, making the rounds from Canton Street to Plum Tree Village and Oak Street.
