Westminster softball had a big hole to fill in the pitching circle coming into the 2013 season with the loss of the school’s all-time career wins leader Michelle Bonnot.

Andi Carrandi has stepped in to help close that gap rather successfully.

The junior pitcher has posted a 6-1 record going into Westminster’s game with Wesleyan last Thursday and has teamed up with sophomore Emily Bassett (3-1) to maintain the Wildcats’ strong presence in the circle.

Carrandi, who also plays shortstop, has produced at the plate as well with a .429 batting average. She led the team in home runs (2) and was tied for second in RBIs (9) as of last Thursday.

“She is, without a doubt, our most athletic player on the team,” Westminster coach Brent McGuire said. “She gets by a lot with her athleticism, but she doesn’t rely on that alone. She is becoming a more cerebral-type pitcher. She has three really good pitches that she uses effectively and is learning how to pitch. She’s not just being an athlete out there, but she’s learning the mental approach as well.”

Softball is only one of the sports that Carrandi excels in at Westminster, also playing a key role for the school’s girls’ basketball and girls’ lacrosse teams.
