After losing their first three games of the season, Hiram’s softball team answered with four wins to give them a winning record but now sit at 7-7 after last week – listed fourth in the region 5-AAAAA standings.

Head coach Michelle Caldwell attributed the early losses to a lack of chemistry among the players in their positions.

“Although we have a strong nucleus back from last year’s squad, we did have to replace two key defensive players. We had to shift some girls around and so the first three games were still kind of trying to figure out our lineup,” said Caldwell.

With each passing game, the players become more comfortable with each other and runners that were once stuck on base are now being followed by key hits to bring them home.

As the team gels more and more, there are several players making a huge impact on the team – juniors Danielle Downs, Kayleigh Briant and Jinni Pethel.

“Danielle is our No. 1 pitcher and our biggest offensive threat. She is hitting over .500 right now and leads the team in RBI,” the coach said.

Briant moved into the catcher’s spot “and is doing a great job for us behind the plate,” she said.

“Jinni is our anchor in the outfield. Her speed is our biggest asset and she is a great defensive leader for us,” said Caldwell.

Sept. 6 and 7 the team played in the Twin Creeks-Cherokee Invitational.

Prior to the event Caldwell said, “We are excited about playing in such a great tournament. I put us in that tournament to expose this team to quality competition. We have to challenge ourselves if we ever want our program to take the next step.”

The Lady Hornets began the tournament with two losses as they fell to Woodstock, 13-4, and then to Hillgrove, 7-6.

The team will travel to Villa Rica today for its next game.
