Soul singer serves Southern cuisine at new location in south Fulton

Legendary singer and entrepreneur Gladys Knight and her son, Shanga Hankerson, are serving up soul food to south Fulton residents at their newest Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles Restaurant.

The restaurant opened Sept. 6 at 3752 Cascade Road in Atlanta to “bring [their] unique, Southern cuisine to people on the south side of the city,” Knight said at a kickoff luncheon last week.

Patrons can enjoy traditional, Southern dishes like fried fish and grits, chicken with gravy and sides such as collard greens and sweet potato soufflé.

“We’re very pleased with the menu because we love our Southern cuisine and it’s a part of our heritage,” Knight said.

The singer and her son also announced the introduction of new program which will begin at the Cascade Road location and will be aimed at feeding hungry school children.

The program, called Food for Thought, will provide breakfast for south Fulton children under the age of 13 during the school year.

“Parents can buy a lunchbox and from that point on the child can come in and get free a free breakfast during the school week,” Knight said.

She said her son, who had the idea for the restaurant, also proposed the Food for Thought program.

“[The program] is a little gift we can give back to the Atlanta community that has been so supportive of me over the years,” Knight said.

The first location of the now three-location restaurant chain opened near Ponce De Leon Avenue in Atlanta in 1997.

Hankerson credits his family as the reason for the restaurant’s success and popularity.

“Starting out, our family did all of the cooking,” he said.

He said they have plans for three more stores opening in the future for a total of six restaurants.

Knight and Hankerson said they both hope to expand their restaurant internationally, so “Southern cuisine will be recognized worldwide.”

Hours for the restaurant will run from 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
