Last season, the Westlake softball team won only nine games. On Sept. 5, the Lady Lions surpassed that total with a 13-4 victory over Douglas County and reached the double-digit mark in wins for the first time since 2005.

“Everybody really came in focused this year,” Westlake short stop Amber Johnson said. “We had a lot of new girls last year and over the summer they got more playing time and experience so they are more comfortable with the game. I think everybody has more confidence.”

Johnson, a junior, has been one of the major contributors, owning a .537 batting average with 20 hits, 25 runs and team highs of 14 walks and 27 stolen bases in 15 games.

“I do anything I need to do to get on,” Johnson said. “I have to get on because I have a pretty high stealing percentage. So whatever I don’t get off a hit or a bunt I will steal.”

“Amber is an excellent student-athlete,” Westlake softball coach Samuel Coley said. “She is a strong captain and leader. It’s been a pleasure coaching Amber and all the Lady Lions. They work very hard on and off the field.”

Johnson “absolutely” wants to play on the next level while majoring in criminal justice with a minor in psychology. She would also like to be an FBI agent.
