Breast cancer survivors will strut down the runway Friday as North Fulton Hospital hosts its third annual Power of Pink luncheon, fashion show and silent auction. The event is a fundraiser for the Greater Atlanta Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“The first year we raised $18,000,” said Beth Downs, the hospital’s marketing coordinator. “Last year we raised more than $25,000, and we are well on our way to more than $30,000 [this year].”

She anticipates about 350 guests will attend this year’s fundraiser.

Downs said the silent auction will have something for everybody. Items up for bid include artwork, tickets to attractions in downtown Atlanta, dining packages, spa packages, concert tickets, trips to Africa, celebrity memorabilia and more. The auction will feature more than 100 items that have been donated, she said.

Downs said the fashion show portion of the afternoon will be even bigger than the past two years with Avalon on board as a sponsor.

“We have five retailers from Avalon that are providing the fashions for the show,” said Micah Brown, breast health nurse navigator and organizer of the fashion show. “We have two salons — Borrelli’s and William David Salon — that are doing hair and makeup for the models. We’re really just looking forward to being able to show support for all these women.”

Brown said the 11 fashion show models are all breast cancer survivors. Pam Shinholster, a volunteer at the hospital and one of the models, said she looking forward to dressing up in outfits from retailer Tommy Bahama. She said the event is important to her “to let other ladies know that life isn’t over with just because you’re diagnosed with [breast cancer].”

Downs said the fashion show can be a little emotional for those in the audience as the models are presented and the audience learns a little about their journeys with breast cancer.

“Everybody has been touched in some way by breast cancer,” she said. “It’s just that prevalent.”

Other breast cancer survivors and the families of anyone who has had the disease will be recognized following the show, Downs said.

Dr. Laura Rivers Pearson, medical director for North Fulton Hospital’s breast program, said the hospital has made great strides with its program, nearly doubling the amount of breast health imaging provided to patients since 2010.

“We strive very hard to provide compassionate, technologically advanced care for our women in our communities,” she said.
