The school was also just named a Georgia School of Excellence for 2013 in the area of high achievement in academics.
Not only are students excelling academically, but also the school’s physical education department has them excelling when it comes to meeting healthy lifestyle initiatives.
Hembree Springs received a Silver Medal from the Governor’s Shape Honor Roll program this year which honors schools who support and encourage their staff and students to meet goals with physical activity, nutrition and wellness.
The P.E. department has combined forces with the Healthy Lifestyles Committee, the Nutrition staff and Strong 4 Life to achieve these student wellness goals.
Students participate in healthy food tastings, Strong 4 Life, and their regular physical activity classes.
The school also hosts a community 5K event each spring with more than 400 runners which includes hundreds of students and their families.
Several of the initiatives that led to the SHAPE award are run by teacher, Holly Marzetti, who encourages healthy eating, started a running club for students, administered the state sponsored fitness testing and supports students involvement in outside activities.
Marzetti said, “I feel honored to work in an environment where so many people have come together to encourage our students and staff to live a healthy lifestyle allowing us to earn this award.”
