Stephenson’s volleyball program has had only one winning season since 2006 which came last season with the Jaguars notching 18 wins. This year, Stephenson has already won 16 matches and has placed itself in contention for not only a region championship but among the top teams in the entire state.

One of the biggest catalysts for the program’s improvement has been senior outside hitter Kiara Stone.

In her second year with the program, Stone has provided the Jaguars with strong offensive play, placing among the DeKalb county leaders in aces and kills.

“Kiara brings a great deal of experience to our squad with a killer mentality that you want players to have,” Stephenson head coach Dennis Watkins said. “You want Kiara on the court with the ball in her hands because she’s aggressive and talented.”

The Jaguars are trying place their mark within a county which talents’ level has grown over the years. “The volleyball in DeKalb county is good and has become more competitive over time with talented players such as Kiara.”

Stephenson has also earned wins over strong teams such as Tucker and Redan, showing that the contributions of the Jaguars’ senior class, including Kiara’s twin sister Kiana and Nadaysia Brooks, have improved the overall state of the program.

Kiara started her prep career at Arabia Mountain and plays club volleyball for the Atlanta Boom.

The Jaguars will return to action on Thursday in matches against Chamblee and Cross Keys.
