The top four finishers qualify for the state playoffs in Classes AA through AAAAAA. Qualifiers for Class A will be determined by the GHSA’s final power ranking of the season, with the top 16 teams advancing.
Pace, Mount Vernon Presbyterian, Holy Innocents’ and Galloway are participating in the 5A tournament at Strong Rock Christian in Locust Grove.
Second-seeded Pace will open the tournament against seventh-seed Galloway in a first-round game Oct. 7.
“We are a young group,” Pace coach Kris Palmerton said. “They have come together as the season has progressed. Honestly, we are just excited to see how far we can go in the region tournament and let the power rankings take care of themselves.”
The other two local teams in the 5A tournament will play each other as well, with fourth-seeded Mount Vernon going up against fifth-seeded Holy Innocents’ Oct. 7.
“I feel like we are in the toughest softball region in single A,” Holy Innocents’ coach Dan Healy said. “We’ve played very well in region play and I know our girls will be ready to play next week.
Lovett hosts the 6AA tournament Oct. 7 through 10, with the Lions taking on archrival Westminster in the first round.
The Wildcats and the Lions are already assured of Class AA state playoff spots in the four-team region, which also includes Wesleyan and Greater Atlanta Christian.
“We are excited about the upcoming region tournament,” Westminster coach Brent McGuire said. "Believe me, all four teams in the tournament have this week circled on the calendar. The tournament always offers an exciting brand of softball for the entire week. Anytime you play Wesleyan, Lovett and GAC on consecutive nights, you are going to have to be at your best in order to come out on top. This tournament brings out the best in all four teams, which makes for an exciting week of high school softball.”
St. Pius X will be the second seed as it plays in the 6AAA tournament Oct. 7 through 11.
The Golden Lions have secured a first-round bye, along with top-seed Blessed Trinity, and will host a best-of-three semifinal series Oct. 7.
Marist will be the top seed in its subregion as it hosts the 6AAAA tournament Oct. 8 through 10.
North Springs and Riverwood are playing in the Region 7AAAAA tournament at Al Bishop Park in Marietta Oct. 7 through 11.
North Atlanta will be trying to secure a bid in AAAAA as it takes part in the 6AAAAA tournament at the Southeast Athletic Complex in Lithonia Monday through Oct. 10.
The Warriors are the sixth seed and will take on third-seeded Southwest DeKalb in a play-in game Thursday, with the winner advancing to the main part of the tournament.
