Freshman pitcher Mallie Brown has been a pleasant surprise for coach Kelli Poff and the Woodland-Henry softball team.

“I didn’t know her and she was new to the school,” Poff said. “I didn’t know what to expect from her coming into the season but I’ve been really impressed.”

Before this past Monday’s 11-0 win against Luella, Brown, who has pitched in majority of the Lady Wolfpack’s games, had a 1.75 ERA.

“As a coach, all I can ask of her is to give us a chance in every game and she has done that,” Poff said. “That says a lot of her as a freshman. The girls believe in her and she believes in them.”

“I like being out there with my teammates and pitching for them,” Brown said. “Having a lot of success with them.”

With the postseason right around the corner, and Brown limiting the opposition from the mound and Lexi Emanuel leading the way at the plate, Woodland hopes advance past the Sweet 16.

“I’m really proud of Mallie for what she has done on the mound and what the team has done,” Poff said. “When she does her job well and the team plays well behind her, I believe we got a good shot to go somewhere this year.”

“I need to focus on pitching and doing what I can at the plate,” Mallie said.
