Against Blessed Trinity and St. Pius on Oct. 1, Woodward Academy senior Rachel Ware was very impressive. According to volleyball coach Tad Sahara, the 6-foot-1 outside hitter had a total of 13 kills with a .367 attack percentage without any receiving errors against both teams.

The Lady War Eagles lost 2-1 to Blessed Trinity but defeated St. Pius 2-1 which Ware, who had eight kills in that contest, noted as her best game this season.

“They are our main rival so we really focused on doing our best against them,” she said. “It was just a really good game.”

Due to a cold, Ware didn’t participate in the Border War Challenge this past weekend but should be ready to go for the Area 2-AAA tournament which begins Thursday.

“We’re mainly trying to be a defensive team and have that as our strong point,” said Ware, who has 180 kills.

Woodward has a strong chance of capturing its second straight area tournament championship after earning a 7-0 mark in league competition this season.

“I like the team aspect that comes with volleyball--that you can’t do it alone,” Ware said. “You really need the other five girls around you to accomplish what you want.”

Ware is still unsure about playing volleyball on the next level but would eventually like to become an emergency room doctor.
