In a matchup between the top two football teams in Class AAAAA, Tucker used a 35-yard touchdown catch by Nekyle Lundie over several Stephenson defenders with less than 20 seconds left to gain a 31-28 victory at Hallford Stadium on Friday night.

The Jaguars (5-1, 4-1) looked to secure the victory with late-game theatrics of their own when quarterback Giovanni Weekly connected with tight end Ari Werts for a 45-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left, giving Stephenson a 28-24 lead.

The first two quarters of the contest were a defensive struggle, with both teams’ offenses struggling to even get the ball into their opponents’ side of the field. Tucker (6-0, 5-0) earned the first points of the game with a 53-yard punt return by Duke Shelley, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 1:22 left in the first half.

Stephenson responded with Werts’ first touchdown of the contest on a 10-yard pass from Weekley to tie the score at 7-7 heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams score touchdowns with Lundie catching his first score of the game on a 54-yard catch and Stephenson running back Dallas Rivers tying the score at 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter with a 48-yard touchdown run.

Early in the fourth quarter, a 31-yard field goal by Eric Webber gave the Tigers a 17-14 lead. Rivers responded with his second touchdown run of the game allowing the Jaguars to retake the lead, 21-17.

The Tigers avenged their loss last season to Stephenson in the first-ever meeting of the two programs. Tucker has now begun a season undefeated through the first six games for the third time in four years, with the last occurrence happening in the program’s state championship campaign in 2011 when the Tigers went 15-0.

Both teams return to action this Friday in home contest as Tucker faces Southwest DeKalb while Stephenson battles Miller Grove.
