I recently learned that one of our valued artists in Sandy Springs, photographer Eric Bern, may lose his unique studio due to the city’s plans to put the proposed Bluestone Road extension right through his building!

The city’s desire to promote economic development in downtown Sandy Springs may result in the destruction of businesses such as Eric’s unnecessarily without fully considering alternatives that could save taxpayers money.

I have used Eric’s photography business on numerous occasions over the past 23 years in Sandy Springs, and I can understand his frustration over the way the city has dealt with him.

I understand that he has received misleading information and that his concerns have become even more heightened as he became aware of the city’s liberal use of eminent domain on Roswell Road.

Eric presented alternatives for the Bluestone Road extension at a recent city council meeting including: 1) a pedestrian-friendly walkway that could be placed along the side of his property that would achieve the same goals and save taxpayers money without destroying his business and; 2) a better location for the road near a parking deck planned for in the near future.

As a longtime Sandy Springs resident, I am upset (and I believe others may be as well) that the city’s plans would be catastrophic to businesses such as Eric’s. The city should explore ways to reduce this nearly $100 million project and save a treasured small business.
