This year, both teams will enter this contest with 5-0 sub region records after convincing wins last week. Marist routed Chamblee 45-0, thanks to first-quarter touchdown runs by Michael Toner and a TD run by Griffin King in the second quarter. Marcus Miller also had a passing touchdown and a rushing score.
Meanwhile, Carver topped Grady 28-7 last Friday. Marist has won all five meetings against Carver.
In Class AAAAA, top-ranked Tucker attempts to not only win the Region 6-AAAAA championship but record its sixth perfect regular season in the past nine years when the Tigers visit Mays at Lakewood Stadium on Friday.
Last season, Tucker edged Mays 14-7 to win its fourth straight game in the series.
Less than a week ago, Yaquis Shelley scored four touchdowns as the Tigers downed M.L. King 60-34. Joseph Farrar had two TD passes and rushed for another, and Dominick Sanders ran for a score.
Meanwhile, Mays slid by Stephenson 13-9 last Saturday.
Also in Region 6-AAAAA, M.L. King can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Miller Grove at Hallford Stadium on Friday. But if the Lions lose and Arabia Mountain defeats Lakeside at Panthersville Stadium on Saturday, the Rams will advance to the postseason for the first time in school history.
In Class AAAA, Columbia can punch its ticket back to the postseason with a victory over Banneker at Avondale Stadium on Friday. Lithonia can achieve the same goal but will have to overtake Grady on the road Friday.
Other teams such as St. Pius, Cedar Grove and Decatur are competing to qualify for the playoffs or improve their positioning as well.
