For 20 years, the Vinings Historic Preservation Society has upheld the community’s past with support from local residents.

Entering into the second year of a $250,000 capital campaign, the society is hosting the Celebration of Preservation gala Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Pace House and The Old Pavilion. Proceeds will go toward repairs and renovations at the Pace House, the Old Pavilion and The Yarbrough House — the three 1800s properties under the society’s care.

“We’re really fortunate that the Vinings community is very supportive of the historic society and our mission to preserve the buildings,” said Executive Director Gillian Greer.

The “Keeping Pace” capital campaign kicked off last November. Since then, more than $100,000 has been raised, not counting the money already coming in from the upcoming black-tie-invited affair, Greer said.

Josie Carlyle, one of the event co-chairs along with Rebecca McCune and Holly Gardner, said the goal for the gala is to raise an additional $50,000.

“With funds we’ve raised so far, we’ve replaced the roof on [the Yarbrough House and] replaced the signage,” Greer said. “At the Pace House, we have some work to do on the foundation, we need a new deck [and] we need to paint. We’re getting new signage at the Pace House [and] landscape improvements.”

Carlyle said the fundraising is just one aspect of the event, however. The celebration marks the 20th anniversary of the society and will honor the family of the late Felix Cochran, the developer of the Vinings Jubilee shopping center.

Lynn Cochran Schroder, Cochran’s widow, said she and her family are humbled and grateful to be recognized.

“[Felix] would be quite honored,” she said. [Vinings Jubilee] was his pride and joy.”

Saturday’s gala will include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres followed by a seated dinner, dessert and dancing.
