The Chapel Hill softball team had another successful campaign in 2013, winning the Region 4-AAA tournament and advancing to the second round of the playoffs, finishing with an overall record of 21-14. A major contributor to the Panthers was senior outfielder Hannah Austin.

The three-year starter’s solo home run against Pierce County propelled Chapel Hill to a 4-1 win in game one of the second round series on Oct. 23. It was Austin’s first career home run.

“It was exciting to win the region and the first round series,” Austin said. “We fought hard and worked together as a team.”

“Hannah is a true leader on and off the field by being a great student and a terrific player,” head coach Mickey Harper said.

Austin has experienced growth on the field as a Panther.

“I started in left field as a sophomore and was nervous,” she said. “I moved to centerfield in my junior year and as a senior became a leader for the team and tried to get everyone involved.”

Austin is also on the varsity swim and tennis teams at Chapel Hill. Academically, she’s the president of the National Honor Society, editor of the school’s yearbook, member of the history club along with the Heath Occupation Students of America.

She plans to major in marketing and international business in college.
